VIHSTA

Visionary Interprofessional Health Sciences Training in Arizona-this pilot program for cross cultural & interprofessional training was based on the model developed through the Nuestra Comunidad, Nuestra Salud Project which trained health professions students in Nogales, AZ for 12 years. Key characeristics of that project were the collaboration between health sciences faculty & community-based practitioners,a focus on innovation, an empahsis on community health & prevention, and that all students, regardless of profession, participated in the community health activities.

During the summer of 2008 14 students representing nursing, public health, pharmacy & medicine, lived in Nogales, AZ for 5-6 weeks where they surveyed the community for resources for senior citizens 8 other students were located in Chinle, AZ where they conducted their own surveys. The photo was taken in front of a produce warehouse located on the edge of Nogales. The students had a tour where they learned how important the produce industry is to Santa Cruz County. They also had a tour of a factory in Nogales, Sonora where they visited the on-site medical clinic that is run by the public hospital.
